As a WSL specialty-sanctioned big-wave event, The Eddie has drawn a prestigious cross-section of the world’s finest watermen, including competitors from the elite WSL Championship Tour (CT) and underground chargers that hold high merit within the big wave community. The Eddie has only run nine times in its storied 32-year history. L to R: Evan Valiere, Mark Healey, John Florence, Nathan Florence, Koa Rothman, Greg Long, Jamie O’Brien. Surfers gathered for the opening ceremony on December 1, 2016. The waterman became a legendary figure in Hawaii after an ill-fated attempt to save fellow crew members onboard the Hōkūle’a in 1978, and continues to inspire generations with his symbolism of bravery, camaraderie and aloha spirit. “The Eddie” can only run when wave face heights hit the range of 40-feet-plus for a full day of competition – an opportunity that did not present itself this winter.īeginning in 1985, the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational has been an invite-only big-wave event that takes place at Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu, where the late Eddie Aikau served as the North Shore’s first lifeguard. One year, when the waves met the height requirement but appeared too dangerous to surf, organizers considered calling it off. Mark Foo turned to a cameraman who was capturing the surf check and said the now-revered slogan: “Eddie would go.” And they did.HALEIWA, Oahu, Hawaii – (Monday, February 27, 2017) - The three-month holding period for the 2016/17 Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, a World Surf League (WSL) Specialty Event, will draw to a close at 4pm HST tomorrow. ![]() Kelly Slater and Eddie’s brother Clyde are also among the honored winners. The most recent victor was Greg Long in 2009, with Hawaiian Bruce Irons preceding him in 2004 with an epic shorebreak barrel. Holding out for a minimum of 20-foot waves, the competition doesn’t happen every year, and, in fact, has only happened eight times since its inception in 1985. In honor of Edward Ryon Makuahanai Aikau exists the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau surf competition, affectionately known as “the Eddie.” To open the waiting period, surfers, both ASP tour champions and born-and-bred locals, paddle out to a recreation of the Hokule’a that went under 36 years ago. However, from the devastation arose the community Eddie held so close, strengthened by its resolve to not only remember their hero, but celebrate him. The foremost champion of the newest state was taken from the community he loved much too early. It was a tremendous loss for the surf community, but it was an even bigger loss for Hawaiʻi, and, tangentially, the United States. The ensuing search for Aikau was the largest air-sea search in Hawaiian history. He removed his lifejacket since it was hindering his paddling of the surfboard. Coast Guard Cutter Cape Corwin, Aikau was never seen again. In an attempt to get help, Aikau paddled toward Lanai on his surfboard. Although the rest of the crew was later rescued by the U.S. The double-hulled voyaging canoe developed a leak in one of the hulls and later capsized about twelve miles (19 km) south of the island of Molokai. And as lifeguard and cultural ambassador, he was able to do that. Rather than hide Hawaiʻi from the rest of the world, he wanted to share its natural beauty, and teach everyone why it was so necessary to appreciate the native roots that were often ignored and cast aside by non-natives, namely developers in Waikiki. And while he himself embodied all the values needed to be among the North Shore’s best, riding the biggest and heaviest waves around with a intense passion for the pursuit, he wanted to help others do the same. Surfing is a very individualized sport: it’s an exploration of one’s own limits - physical, mental, and spiritual. What made Eddie different was, without a doubt, his selflessness. ![]() During a nine-year tenure as protector of the hallowed coastline, he attempted over 500 rescues. With a recognized prowess as a waterman, he was appointed lifeguard of the beaches between Sunset and Haleiwa, an appropriate role for the big wave surfer as he often swam into 30 foot swells. Born in Maui, his family moved to Oahu when he was 16, and shortly thereafter he was a North Shore local surfing the gnarliest breaks, his favorite being Waimea Bay. And it was Eddie’s love for both that led him to paddle out of a maelstrom and into the open sea towards Lānaʻi for help.īut before he went on the courageous rescue mission, his legend was already growing on the islands. ![]() And Eddie loved his community: his people his Hawaiʻi. Makua Hanai literally means “feeding parent” in Hawaiian, usually in the description of a fostering parent who nurtures those around them - not only one’s kin, but the community they hold close. His full name, Edward Ryon Makuahanai Aikau, makes it seem as if he was born for his life’s journey.

Shieldhall is now a frequent sight around the Solent running excursions, crewed by volunteers. She has been restored to sea-going condition, and is listed as part of the National Historic Fleet. The remaining Glasgow sludge boats kept going into the 1990s, when changing environmental standards led to new ways of treating the sludge. All work associated with the Society and Shieldhall is carried out by unpaid volunteers. Preservation SS Shieldhall moored at Custom House quay, Greenock in 2005.ĭue to rising fuel prices she was withdrawn from service in 1985, then was taken over by a preservation society, The Solent Steam Packet Limited, which operates as a charity. In 1976 after 21 years of service on the Clyde, Shieldhall was laid up, and in the following year was bought by the Southern Water Authority to carry sludge from Southampton, England, to an area south of the Isle of Wight. She and her sister ships were jocularly known as Clyde banana boats as the livery resembled that of a well known banana shipping company. She entered service in October 1955 and was operated by Glasgow Corporation to transport treated sewage sludge down the Clyde to be dumped at sea. Accommodation was provided for 80 passengers. She was built on the classic lines of a 1920s steam tanker with a traditional wheelhouse of riveted and welded construction, a slightly raked stem and a cruiser stern. Glasgow Corporation had long allowed day-trippers access to the engine room of its ships while at sea and the older-style engines allowed passengers to see the workings of the engines in operation. By the 1950s Lobnitz usually built its engines with enclosed crankcases but the Shieldhall was deliberately fitted with traditional open-crank engines. of Renfrew who also constructed the two triple expansion steam engines which are set vertically in a similar way to the much larger engines on the RMS Titanic. The 1,972-ton Shieldhall was laid down in October 1954, built by Lobnitz & Co. History Passengers can go down into the engine room between the two steam engines. SS Shieldhall has been preserved and offers cruises to the paying public. These steamships had a tradition, dating back to the First World War, of taking organised parties of passengers on their trips during the summer. She spent her working life as one of the "Clyde sludge boats", making regular trips from Shieldhall in Glasgow, Scotland, down the River Clyde and Firth of Clyde past the Isle of Arran, to dump treated sewage sludge at sea. She is one of the last reciprocating steam engined ships built, using technology that dated back to the last quarter of the 19th century and which was obsolete at the time of her construction. SS Shieldhall is a preserved steamship that operates from Southampton. The engine had been residing in the main museum building hidden in the dark recesses near the upcoming Steam Engine display area. ![]() Leaping ahead to the spring of 2015, a project began that is the “restoration” of a Herreshoff triple expansion steam engine with cylinder bores of 3-1/2”, 5” and 8” and sporting a 4–1/2” stroke. One of his projects was the motor launch “Vapor” built around 1898 which was powered by the triple expansion steam engine. Skipping ahead a few years to 1878, Nathanael Greene Herreshoff formed Herreshoff Manufacturing Company. Here’s one possibility – in the first century A.D., Hero of Alexandria invented the aeolipile, or primitive steam turbine: Now, what to do with this hot, high pressure water vapor? Cooking lobsters leaps to mind but that’s a different discussion. Perhaps by accident, a cover was left on too long and pressure built up and then we had steam! At some point the pot being used (I have no idea who discovered the utensil to hold water over a fire) was covered to speed up the heating of the water. Then, someone discovered fire – how that occurred is open for debate but obviously it happened! Now that fire was available, early humans (they had to have an opposing thumb to lift up a pot!) heated up the water to make coffee (well, that sounds good!). Its primary use was survival of all living creatures. ![]() Warranty: AppleCare+ for iMac (3 yr limited warranty & telephone technical support).Keyboard + Mouse: Space Gray Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad + Magic Mouse 2. ![]() Monitor: 27-inch LED-backlit 5K display.Additional HDD (Storage): Not available.Graphics Card: Radeon Pro Vega 64 with 16GB.Processor: 3.0GHz 10-core Intel Xeon W processor. If you love data we’re sure you’ll enjoy looking at our charts, which show how the systems compare, but if charts aren’t your thing you can always scroll past the data to read our conclusion.
